We believe in lessening our environmental impact by re-defining conventional product lifecycle through repair and resole. Bedrock is excited to announce some new updates to our Re-Soul & Repair program.
When Bedrock was still a micro business side hustle, Co-Founder Dan Opalacz traveled around in his camper van, searching for waves and the freedom of the open road. One of the side hustles that kept him afloat when Bedrock was quite tiny was building out Tumblr pages for Patagonia’s newly launched Worn-Wear program. The ethos behind that program was that gear should last a long time, collect memories, and be repairable when something finally wears out. This philosophy combined with Nick’s (Bedrock’s other co-founder) foundational working experience in the conservation field, inspired our Re-Soul program.
Fast forward to 2014, when we started working on the now award-winning Cairn Sandal, we knew we wanted it to be re-solable and easily repairable. Creating durable, repairable footwear has been a foundational design principle at Bedrock since day one; however, our early models made this goal challenging. We’ve often grappled with the throwaway nature of modern sport footwear. How do we make something that lasts, and when materials wear out over time, can be retooled to give it a second life? And, in a world chock full of greenwashing, what kind of program can we develop and stand behind 100%, knowing we are making a positive impact?
Enter our Re-Soul & Repair Program, launched in 2016 alongside our Cairn product, we added an avenue to stand behind our product and warranty even further. Once the tread has worn away on your Vibram® Sole (a feat that can sometimes include thousands of miles of wear), we can replace the entire sole unit, saving your well-loved straps, and get you back on the trail for around half the cost of a new pair. At the same time we save the soles (lol) and later send them to a recycler to be upcycled into other rubber products. Plus, if you’re interested you can have a colorful Re-Soul tag sewn on the adjuster strap as a badge of honor.
Dog ate your straps? It’s incredible—and frustrating—how often this happens! Dog owners are always stoked with a quick repair on their favorite sandals. The same repair program also services damage caused by mountain goats, marmots, and other backcountry friends who equally enjoy your hard-earned sweat. Pro tip: Keep your sandals inside your tent at night to avoid this issue in the backcountry :)
Our robust repair program offers solutions for all sorts of Bedrock wear, both in and out of warranty. Want to update the heel strap on your OG Cairns to our newer, more whitewater friendly heel-hook strap? We can do that for a nominal fee. Did the metal loop hardware ever break on your first generation Cairns? This is fixed in a pinch with the aluminum hardware we updated to in 2018 that, as far as we have tested, won't break. Hint: In a pinch this can be DIY fixed with a zip tie or keychain ring. There's something so satisfying about repair.
Now we’re excited to refresh this program in a host of ways. Read on to learn more about our updates.
Re-Soul to our new Evo sizing standard
Earlier this year, we completely re-tooled the soling in our Cairn line to become the Cairn Evo line. The new Evo line upgrades the fit, feel, and function of our sandals. Now available in our Re-Soul program, you'll get the Evo upgrade once your current soles wear out or if you’d like to try a different footbed option, such as the Evo Cs. Note: Please check out the new Evo sizing changes to make sure you’re choosing the right fit.
Clog Re-Souls
One of the first Re-Souled Mountain Clogs @ Grizzly Resole
New custom Vibram® Mountain Clog Outsoles ready for a Re-Soul
We designed the Mountain Clogs to be resolable first and foremost but had no idea how popular of a product they would become so quickly or how long it would take for the first Bedrocker to need a Re-Soul on their worn out clog. We resoled the first requests that came through with ready-made sole options from Vibram® while we worked on a custom outsole made particularly for Mountain Clog Re-Souls. We are happy to announce that our Mountain Clog service is now available. Note: Unlike our sandal Re-Souls, Mountain Clog Re-Souls replace just the outsole and require wearers to send them back before wearing past the outsole tread and into the midsole.
A peak into the process of Missoula’s own, Carl of Grizzy Resole, working through a Mountain Clog Re-Soul from sanding the down old sole down to cobbling together the new one.
New Labels and Packaging
When the time came for a Re-Soul program refresh with the above new options, Bedrock Director of Ops and in-house artist, Matt McAdow, got to work redesigning the finished Re-Soul packaging as well as some new woven label options for your Bedrock Re-Soul badge of honor.
Re-souled sandals now go out in newly designed Kraft mailers printed by Eco-Enclose with algae based ink. Mountain Clogs are returned in their boxes with new, colorful packaging tape.
Re-Soul Tag Options
The somewhat elusive Double Re-Soul tag on Bedrocker Kevin's Cairn Pros, after their round two Re-Soul.
Now you can choose from one of two Re-Soul woven labels (or opt out if it’s not your thing) to be affixed to the quick-fit adjustment strap of your sandals or clogs. If you are sending in sandals for a second Re-Soul you can opt in for the new Double Re-Soul label and display it as a harmless humble brag to your dirtbag friends.
A special thanks to all of our customers who use and abuse our footwear and choose a repair or Re-Soul when the time comes. We’re thrilled to offer a robust in-house program and find a lot of joy in seeing what comes in and goes back out of our doors, knowing that we’re building a product people are wearing hard, create memories in, and Re-Souling when the time finally comes.
