Story of Bedrock Sandals

Bedrock Sandals was started by two geologists, fresh out of college, with an idealistic vision of creating the ultimate outdoor sandals to match their adventurous lifestyle.

We started in 2011 in our garage with the concept of building a classic huarache sandal with nylon straps and a backpack buckle in lieu of the traditionally used huarache sandal knot and leather laces. Since our kickstarter in 2011 we have dedicated our company vision to creating performance and quality driven outdoors sandals - all in our small manufacturing facilities in the USA.

We are proudly based in Richmond, California where we manufacture Bedrock Sandals in our small and awesome factory! Each year we donate one percent of our sales to help conserve and restore the environment through 1% for the Planet. Join our community and follow us on Instagram and Facebook.

Our Outdoor Sandal Design Theory

Our bodies and feet have evolved through human history to walk, hike, and run incredible distances. As outdoor footwear designers, our overall goal is to harness our natural human-inherited flow of movement. That means keeping a zero drop sole profile as well as creating a sole platform that provides comfort + grip across terrain without unnaturally forcing your feet one way or the other.

Most traditional sport sandals aim to create a sole platform that forces your feet to conform as you walk. Our goal is exactly the opposite. We design footwear to mold over time to your unique feet, not the other way around. Our sandals combine grippy Vibram® outsoles with our adjustable strap system to strike a harmonius balance of performance, durability, and comfort.

As a company, simplicity is our goal from inside to out. We reflect simplicity in the footwear we design all the way to the lifestyles we lead. Simplicity makes us and our feet happy :)

Dan Opalacz (Co-Founder)

Dan is a traveller who from 2011-2013 lived in his 86' Subaru Powered VW Vanagon while traveling around North America, living simply, and always on the hunt for new trails, fly fishing streams, and surf spots. Dan did web design work for Patagonia remotely (he built the original Worn Wear), in the back of his van, while growing the Bedrock Sandals customer base and working on new outdoor sandal designs. In January 2014, in pursuit of a new adventure, Dan traded in his VW van for a small boat in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved out the Bedrock Factory to Oakland, Ca. From September 2014 - January 2015 Dan was en route through the entire country of New Zealand by foot, bike, and canoe with Bedrock ambassador Naresh Kumar.
